Persuasive Techniques

WAL to identify persuasive techniques.  We had to figure out which technique they were using.  We had practised these techniques in the skits we created.  For example

They dress up like a scientist so we believe their expert opinion
30 Seconds has a slogan :”Spray and Walk Away”
Emotional Appeal makes you feel guilty if you don’t use the product

The technique I found easiest to remember is ….
The technique that was hardest was …

Overall, it was Easy

Whale Rider Bias Search

WAL to identify bias in a text.  We had to highlight the words that showed Koro Apirana being biased.  He would be mean to Kahu because he wanted a boy to be the chief but Kahu was next in line and she is a girl.

I thought this activity was
tricky to find where he was being biased.
easy because I could find the examples.

The easiest part was the ones where it said he was grumpy with her.  The hardest part was where it didn’t say it very clearly.

This activity was really interesting.
I hope we get to do something like this again.
I’m enjoying learning about Whale Rider.
I’m enjoying reading the book.

Term 2 Week 2

Yesterday on the 11th of May all of the Yr 5 and Yr 6 went to the Buddhist temple.
We learnt about 3g (do good deeds, say good words, think good things) and 4g (give hope, give joy, give confidence, give convenience. We made origami lotus flowers and we learned about mondo grass, if pressure gets applied to it, (eg. you stand on it) it will jump up straight again. Its just like a person, it shows resilience.

We learnt that the bell then drum is used at 6:30am to remind people to do 3g. (it weighs 3 tonnes)
The Drum then bell is to reflect on the day (weighs 300kg).
The giant Buddha statue weighs 8 tonnes and is made out of one single massive chunk of white jade and some gold leaves.

The Police did a presentation about 3g and 4g  and just before we left we got a wind chime which apparently if you forget 3g and 4g you blow on the spinney thing and you remember the 3g and 4g  again.

Making Connections

W.A.L to make a connection between the real world and the text

Room 20 has been reading the book "Bridge To Terabithia"
In the story it was raining really hard and the creek was swollen and flooded Yesterday it was bucketing down here as well. So we decided to do some authentic learning. We made some raincoats from plastic bags and walked down to see the creek behind our school.
We could see the water flowing fast and the plants have been flattend.
You can even see how high the water rises up to from the grass looking  all flat to one direction.

I thought that it was really cool because we could see the plants ripped out of the ground and the grass was leaning to one side because of the water rising.
